Due to the budget constraints and untransparent cultural policies of the City of Zagreb in 2010, dancer, choreographer and performer selma banich in front of the entrance to the Office for Education, Culture, and Sports of the Municipality of Zagreb staged the protest piece the Croatian National Surrender (2010 at the Platform of Young Choreographers), referring to the Croatian folklore and the notion of surrender indistinguishably (to hand over and to surrender use the same verb in Croatian language). Holding her hand up for hours, mobilizing occasional solidarity in joined action from the passers-by, the performer manifested relationality and dependence as two important characteristics of contemporary dance.
