Mira Sanjina was born on January 14, 1924 in Zagreb. She studied ballet in Zagreb with Ana Maletić, in Vienna with Kurt Joss and in London with Rudolf Laban. She was a character dancer with a strong individuality. In 1940, she gave her first solo evenings with her own choreographies in Zagreb, Belgrade and Ljubljana. After the establishment of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), Sanjina fled to Split, which was then under the administration of the Italian fascists, and from 1943 she joined the National Liberation Movement. During the Second World War, i.e. in the partisans, she was a member of the Theater of People's Liberation.In 1945, after the war, Sanjina was engaged as a soloist of the Ballet of the National Theater in Belgrade. It is there where she danced in "The Legend of Ohrid", "Ballad of a Medieval Love", "Spanish Capriccio", "Love Wizard" and other ballet performances. She choreographed "Salome" by Richard Strauss and "The Ballad of the Wandering Moon", which she staged in Zagreb, as well as dance scenes in operas and on television throughout SFR Yugoslavia.In 1971, she opened the "Studio for Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance" in Belgrade, and retired from the stage the same year. Mira Sanjina died in Belgrade on December 17, 2010, and was buried at the Jewish Cemetery on December 20, 2010.
