Synopsis

Through the dance-research miniature Cypher, the performers explore improvisational dance expression through various street dance styles, including hip hop, breaking, popping, house, locking, and other forms rooted in hip hop culture and freestyle practice.

Music serves as the primary driving force behind this artistic expression, alongside questions concerning the origins and meaning of dance: why and how it all began, what dance represents to each individual, what emotions it evokes, who they become when dancing, and how they perceive, experience, and communicate music, culture, personal experiences, and themselves through movement.

The dance performance Cypher combines precisely structured and open-ended performative elements, drawing on the cypher format characteristic of street dance culture. This structure allows performers to enter the circle and share their authentic dance expressions through improvisation, creating a space for exchange, inspiration, and dialogue between performers and audience members. The cypher thus becomes a meeting point between individual expression and collective experience, where each participant contributes to the community while simultaneously drawing inspiration from it.

The performance was presented at KC Magacin as part of the Magacinski Showcase programme, offering audiences an insight into the dynamic world of street dance and its culture.
