It was founded in 2009 as the first troupe of contemporary dance in Serbia, which is connected to a cultural institution, and which enabled the audience to follow high-quality dance theater during the entire theater season. During the fifteen years of its existence, the Bitef dance company realized forty-one dance productions, won thirty awards and performed over two hundred guest performances in the country and the world.
Bitef dance company has collaborated with some of the most eminent domestic and international choreographers, such as Jo Stromgren, Guy Weitzman, Roni Haver, Jasmin Vardimon, Isidore Stanišić, Edvard Klug, Konstance Makras, Matjaž Farič, Dalija Aćin, Zoran Marković, Maša Kolar, Branko Potočan, Leo Mujić, Dunja Jocić, Ferliks Landerer...
The performances Miris cimenta, Prostor za revoluciju, Othello, Divine Comedy, Alpha Boys, Sonnets, Easter Day, Birds, Cities that are no more... but also the more recent Skanderbeg, Zidanje Shkodra, Alpha Girls and others, contributed to the formation of a new audience that regularly follows the dance theater.
In 2017, the Young Bitef dance company was formed, consisting of students from the Department of Contemporary Dance of the Lujo Davičo Ballet School. So far, the Bitef dance company has realized a series of performances for young people, such as Cinderella, The Emperor's New Suit, Spring Awakening, Why You? Dunjaluk.
