Arthur Kuggeleyn (born 1960, Zeist, the Netherlands) is a Dutch choreographer, theatre director, performer, and actor. He spent his childhood in both the Netherlands and Curaçao, and has lived and worked in Berlin since 1979. In 1984, he founded RA-Theater, followed by the avant-garde performance group RA.M.M., through which he developed a distinctive artistic language combining physical theatre, dance, and experimental performance.
After relocating to Switzerland, Kuggeleyn further developed his signature choreographic style, often described as “trance dance” or “trance-hypnotic dance.” His work is characterized by repetitive movement patterns, sound, and visual imagery, creating immersive performances that explore physical energy, emotion, altered states of consciousness, and the relationship between performers and audiences. His productions frequently challenge the conventions of contemporary dance and theatre.
Throughout his career, Kuggeleyn has collaborated with numerous international dance and theatre companies across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Among his notable works are Friendly Fire for the Kosovo Ballet and Cage Birds for the Jin Xing Dance Theatre in Shanghai. His choreographic works have been presented at major international festivals and theatres worldwide.
