Jagoda Slaneva is one of the most significant figures in the history of Macedonian ballet – a distinguished ballerina, prima ballerina, and choreographer whose artistic work has left a lasting mark on the development of ballet in Macedonia.
She was born on 2 October 1949 in Skopje. She belonged to the first generation of ballet students at the Macedonian National Theatre. She received her ballet education at the Secondary Ballet School in Skopje, in the class of Professor Yuri Myachin, a pedagogue from Saint Petersburg, under whose guidance she developed her artistic identity and technique.
She began her professional ballet career in 1968 with the performance of the Pas de deux from the ballet The Nutcracker, set to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Over more than two decades of artistic activity, she became one of the leading figures of Macedonian ballet. As a soloist, and from 1974 as a principal dancer of the company, she distinguished herself through her lyrical stage expression, musicality, and profound emotional interpretation of characters.
Throughout her rich repertoire, she created some of the most significant roles in both classical and contemporary ballet. Among her most acclaimed interpretations are Shirin in The Legend of Love, Maria in The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Kitri in Don Quixote, Carmen in Carmen, as well as leading roles in the ballets The Devil’s Girl, Mirandolina, Labin and Dojrana, Song of Songs, and many other important productions.
As a prima ballerina of Macedonian Ballet, she performed on numerous national and international stages in France, Germany, Poland, Romania, Canada, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, and other countries, representing Macedonian ballet beyond the borders of her homeland.
From 1986 onward, she became actively engaged in choreography. As a choreographer, she created works for ballet and theatre productions, children’s performances, and independent projects. Her choreographic oeuvre includes works such as Mansarda, Farewell to Tanya, Richard III, A Tale of Tales, and others. She also worked as a ballet educator, repetiteur, and artistic collaborator on numerous stage projects, including productions of Macedonian Radio Television.
For her exceptional contribution to ballet art, Jagoda Slaneva received the Menada Award for outstanding achievements in ballet, presented within the framework of the Dance Fest Festival in 2017.
Jagoda Slaneva passed away on 17 October 2017 in Skopje, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important ballet artists in Macedonian cultural history. Her artistry, dedication, and contribution to the development of the ballet scene continue to represent an essential part of the history of Macedonian dance.
